What is Camp Sundown?
Camp Sundown is a night camp for children with life-threatening sun sensitivity Xeroderma Pigmentosa. An XP diagnosis means that they have lower repair levels in their skin, preventing them from being exposed to sunlight as they are at a higher risk of skin cancer. At the camp, kids connect over their shared experience, create new friends and of course, have fun without the sun! The camp is also an annual gathering of families, creating a community of support around their child’s diagnosis. Dr. Moy has been supporting and visiting Camp Sundown since 2018.
Why do we support?
Camp Sundown is special because, for most of these children, it’s the only time of the year they can play with kids like themselves, without worrying about accidental sun exposure or judgement on the extreme protective measures they are required to take. The custom built building has UV-protected windows, indoor swimming pools and night camp activities to keep the kids safe and active. We see love and camaraderie among the XP campers and their parents because they understand each other, support each other, and care for each other.
